How to Win at Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the few casino games where you actually have a chance to beat the house. This is because the game relies on strategy based on probability rather than pure luck. However, winning at blackjack requires a lot of study and practice. The first thing you need to do is learn the rules of the game and master a card counting system. Then you need to practice the strategy and learn when to hit, stand, split and double down.

In a standard game of blackjack, two cards are dealt to each player and the dealer gets one card face up. After each player has acted on their hand, the dealer will draw additional cards for his/her own hand until it is 17 or higher. If the player’s hand total is closer to 21 than the dealer’s, the player wins.

If the dealer has a blackjack, the players lose their original bets and push their side bets (they get paid 2 to 1 for their insurance wagers). The dealer will collect all of the chips, reshuffle and deal new hands.

Novices miss golden opportunities

Because novice players haven’t invested the time to truly understand the game of blackjack, they tend to play their hands too conservatively. They will stand too often when they should hit and hesitate to split pairs or double down as much as they should. As a result, they give up a big edge to the house.

Expert players, on the other hand, know how to exploit every advantage they can find. They will split and double down more often, and they will hit when the odds favor doing so (as opposed to standing when the odds are against it). As a result, they minimize their losses while still making great profits.

The mathematics of blackjack are complex. The probability of a particular hand depends on what the dealer does with his/her own cards as well as the player’s, so it is important to remember that all probabilities in blackjack are conditional. Even though some of the basic strategies are based on simple math, understanding the complexity of the game is required for the best results.

The most popular way to win in blackjack is by beating the dealer. This is done by obtaining a blackjack on your first two cards, or by getting closer to 21 than the dealer. However, the dealer can also win by getting a blackjack or by having a higher hand total than the player’s. The dealer’s final hand will be determined by checking their hole card. If they have a ten underneath, then they win and everyone else loses their original bets. If the dealer doesn’t have a ten, then they push and everyone gets their original bet back. This is why it’s so important to only buy insurance if the dealer has a ten showing. Otherwise, you’re just throwing money away.
